Salinas Chamber of Commerce updated its Facebook photo showing Salinas Police Department had lost an officer in the line of duty. "I share in the mourning, devastation and disbelief surrounding last night's loss," Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane stated. Salinas leaders took to social media Saturday to express their condolences to the Salinas Police Department and the officer's loved ones. The Salinas officer is the fifth California officer killed this year. He was stabbed to death, according to the Officer Down Organization. ![]() The most recent slain officer was a police dog Klief in 2004. The officer killed Friday night is the third in Salinas Police Department's history including the first in 1945 when Edgar Smith died in a crash.
